Spring hair shedding: what to do now to avoid thinning

Spring often brings not only warmth but also an increase in hair shedding. This phenomenon has a biological basis, but its intensity depends on nutrition, sleep and stress levels — factors that are currently especially relevant for Ukrainians. We look at what to do today so as not to regret the loss of density in a few months.

Why hair falls out in spring

Primary cause — a reorganization of the hair growth cycle. Some follicles enter the resting phase (telogen), and after several weeks it initially appears that the hair is "shedding en masse." This phenomenon in medicine is called telogen effluvium.

An increase in shedding is also caused by: iron deficiency, low vitamin D levels, changes in diet, infections, as well as psychological and chronic stress — factors that currently carry additional significance for Ukrainian society.

Specific steps that work

To reduce the intensity of shedding and stimulate recovery, a systematic approach is sufficient. Here is a basic plan recommended by dermatologists and nutritionists:

  • Testing — do a basic set: iron level (ferritin), complete blood count, vitamin D. Deficiencies are corrected under medical supervision.
  • Nutrition — more protein (fish, meat, legumes), vegetables, foods rich in iron and B vitamins. Micronutrients are important for the hair growth cycle.
  • Scalp care — regular but gentle cleansing (1–3 times a week depending on hair type), scalp massage to improve microcirculation, avoiding hot attachments and aggressive styling procedures.
  • Routine and recovery — full sleep, moderate physical activity and simple relaxation techniques (breathing exercises, walks) reduce the risk of chronic stress.
  • Prevention and treatment — with significant hair loss a doctor may prescribe topical or systemic agents; do not experiment with medications without consultation.

When to consult a specialist

If shedding is intense or persists for more than three months, diagnostic evaluation by a dermatologist is required. You should also seek care for localized patches of baldness or accompanying symptoms (fatigue, pallor, changes in the menstrual cycle).

Practical conclusion

Spring shedding is often temporary and can be corrected.
